Aim HigherOn the Thursday of ‘National School Sport Week’ 15 Year 9 prospective GCSE PE/Btec Sport KMCC Students joined over 100 other Year 9 and 10 students from across Sussex in taking the opportunity to attend an Aim Higher Sport and Leisure multi-taster event at the K2 Leisure Centre in Crawley. This leisure centre is the finest in Sussex with a 50m swimming pool and a 12 court sports hall that recently hosted a Paul Weller gig for all you old Mod’s. It also has a full athletics track and field facility and has been chosen as an Olympic Training Centre by the IOC. The day focused on the active element of sport as an academic and vocational pursuit.
Travelling by minibus we arrived just in time for the introduction with our students looking smartly turned out in their KMCC PE shirts. We then followed a program of workshops that included practical sessions on Indoor Wall Climbing, Sport Science, Sports Coaching and Frisbee as a recreational sport. There were two workshops that looked more closely at the facility and management operations of the K2 Leisure Centre – you wouldn’t believe what they find in the filters of their swimming pool! There were also sessions on Sports Development, Online Sports Education with the Open University and Sports Nutrition. This final workshop went down extremely well – although I think this was due to the free food!
The day was rounded off with a panel discussion that looked at a range of topics from how to get a job in the leisure industry to what options there are to study sport in further and higher education. The day was topped off with a keynote speaker from the University of Chichester. He expressed his joy at seeing so many young people from across Sussex facing up to the challenge of their future careers in such a mature and enthusiastic manner.

KMCC Cluster Rounders TournamentOn three sunny Wednesday afternoons in June the KMCC cluster of Primary Schools competed in three different age group Rounders Tournaments. Over 250 pupils took part in these events with many parents and friends coming along to cheer them on.
In all three Tournaments the fielding, bowling, hitting and team work improved steadily. There were many outstanding performances from individuals who had obviously been training hard in preparation for the competitions!
King’s Manor Year 10 Sports Leaders helped to set up the pitches and organise the events. They also took on the tricky task of officiating and scoring the games. With some training behind them they did this expertly.
The Winners of the Tournaments were in Year 2 Swiss Gardens, Year 3 & 4 Buckingham Park and Year 5 & 6 Eastbrook. It is great to see a variety of schools winning these tournaments and shows that there is very strong competition across the cluster.
A massive thank you to all the teachers, parents, pupils and helpers that made these events a success. I can’t wait to see how these teams will have progressed by next summer!

KMCC Cluster Gifted & Talented DayKing’s Manor Community College hosted a Gifted and Talented Day for Year 2, 3 & 4 and Year 5 & 6 pupils from the local cluster of Primary Schools. Specialist coaches in Gym, Dance and Cricket delivered 2 hour programs of activities that the pupils would not normally be able to access at their schools.
Gym Coach, Sam Wilcox, developed gymnastic displays with both her groups that showed fantastic progression and a high level of difficulty. KMCC’s own Dance Teacher, Maria Foster, along with two of our 6th Form A’ level Dance students, choreographed high quality energetic performances. And on the first day of the Ashes, Alan Smith, Sussex County Cricket Coach, worked with his groups on multi-skills, bowling, batting and fielding techniques that culminated in a fast paced game.
A huge thank you to all the pupils, KMCC 6th Form Student helpers, coaches, parents and teachers that helped the day run so smoothly.

KMCC SPORTS LEADERS HAVE A FUN DAYThis year we have 62 volunteer Sports Leaders in Year 10 at King’s Manor! Throughout the year they have attended training on a range of core skills to support them to demonstrate leadership in sport. They have also learnt about health, fitness, fair play and local sports facilities. Over the past few weeks they have put their skills into practise as they have planned, set up and run 6 Fun Days at our local feeder schools.
These Fun Days for Reception and Year 1 pupils at Swiss Gardens, St. Peter’s, Holmbush, Eastbrook North and South, Glebe and St. Nic’s & St. Mary’s Primary Schools were a huge success. Their enthusiasm and organisation throughout was excellent and this ensured that over 300 pupils have experienced high quality fun packed sports activities.

SWISS GARDENS RECEPTION AND YEAR 1 FUN DAYSixteen Year 10 King’s Manor trainee Sports Leaders planned, set up and ran a Fun Day for Reception and Year 1 pupils at Swiss Gardens on Friday 15th May. Their enthusiasm and organisation was excellent and this ensured that all the pupils had a fun packed day.
The activities included hockey, football, basketball and rugby skills. There was also an obstacle relay, skipping skills and a target game. The sports leaders exhibited good initiative as the play grounds of Swiss Gardens are a challenging shape.
Although the weather wasn’t great the spirit and enthusiasm of all concerned was magnificent and contributed to a fantastic day. Thank you to all the sports leaders who worked so hard. Well done!

KMCC CLUSTER YEAR 3 & 4 BOY’S FOOTBALL TOURNAMENTHaving completed my sun dance on Monday night the sun was again beating down on the Astro at the KMCC Cluster Year 3&4 Boy’s Football Tournament, on Wednesday 29th April. With the help of staff from the KMCC PE Department, seven Year 10 Sports Leaders set up the nets and pitches, and refereed and ran the score table.
It was brilliant to see all eight KMCC Cluster schools represented and several could have brought two or even three teams. It was made very clear from the start to all present that we were there to have as much FUN as possible.
There were some outstanding individual performances and the teamwork improved as the tournament went on. As with the girls the week before the best thing was their positive attitude towards their team mates and towards the opposition.
The Tournament was won by Eastbrook Primary with 20 points. They were unbeaten winning 6 and drawing 1, scoring 20 and conceding only 3! Second went to Buckingham Park, only 1 point behind, who were also unbeaten with 5 wins and 2 draws. In third were St. Nicholas and St. Mary’s who won 4 and drew 1.
Thank you to the Year 10 Sports Leaders who refereed all the games effectively and with confidence and to Martin Sacree, KMCC Deputy Head, who presented the certificates and winner’s Trophy.
There was a fantastic turnout of parents who gave positive encouragement to all the teams. Thanks to them and to the teachers, coaches and players who made the tournament a success.

KINGS MANOR CLUSTER YEAR 3/4 TAG RUGBY TOURNAMENTOn Wednesday 18th March on the KMCC Rugby pitch six of the King’s Manor feeder Primary Schools competed for the coveted Year 3/4 Tag-Rugby title. It was made clear to all at the start that the tournament was primarily for fun and a learning experience for the KMCC Junior Sports Leaders. After a warm-up session with the Sports Leaders each team played five games.
The quality of play was greatly increased from last year due to pupils, teachers and coaches working really hard to improve. There was precise ball handling, speedy breaks, dodging and support play leading to scores. All the referees, teachers, coaches and parents did their best to encourage the pupils throughout the tournament and consequently play improved all the way to the last round of games.
The final result was very close with six points separating first, second and third. Eastbrook came third with 18 points, St. Nic’s & St. Mary’s were close runners-up with 21 points and the overall winners with four wins, a draw and a bonus point for quickly sitting down after a game were Buckingham Park with 24 points!
Congratulations to all participants and a huge thank you to referees Tim Moresco and Paul Apps from Shoreham RFC. Also, very well done to the six KMCC Junior Sports Leaders who under some pressure from overexcited spectators helped to set up, warm up the teams, referee the games and clear away all the equipment.

BECKHAM ACADEMYLANCING AND KINGS MANOR CLUSTERS CONVERGE ON THE BECKHAM ACADEMY
On Thursday 19th March selected children from Sompting Village, North Lancing and The Globe schools and due to Seaside not taking up the opportunity St Catherine's from the Chatsmore cluster were able to join us outside Boundstone for an early start off to London. We stopped at Kings Manor to collect the children from Buckingham Park, Glebe, St Nic's and Eastbrook and set off in convoy.
On arrival at the academy the children were wowed by the display of boots, trophies and shirts from David Beckham and other England heroes before they were promptly whisked off to be put in their teams for the day. All the children were mixed up but they jelled really quickly and showed great team spirit. After a multi skills warm up and some competitive activities where the children began to earn points for their teams the real action began.
There was a football tournament as well as some serious work where the children got a taster of some of the other jobs involved with football - sports journalism, physiotherapy, fitness trainers, nutritionists, team manager and scout. These were delivered in a fun and interesting way and again they could earn more points for their team with the work they produced in these sessions. At the end of the day when all the points were tallied together the overall winners were Germany.
It was a fantastic opportunity and the children really got the most out of the day. Three exhausted bus loads of children returned to Adur safe and sound(ly asleep)
Thank you for a brilliant day.
